Carrot Discard as a Promising Feedstock to Produce 2,3-Butanediol by Fermentation with P. polymyxa DSM 365

The valorization of fruit and vegetable residues (such as carrot discard) their microbial conversion into 2,3-butanediol (BDO) can be considered a very interesting way to reduce food waste sustainably originate high value-added products. This work analyzes the discard feedstock for production by Paenibacillus polymyxa DSM 365. influences stirring presence tryptone (nitrogen source) are studied. Furthermore, in order evaluate influence pre-culture medium source, nutrients, pH) substrate, fermentation assays simple mixture semi-defined media (glucose, fructose, and/or galactose) were also carried out. As result, 18.8 g/L BDO, with BDO yield 0.43 g/g (86% its theoretical value), could obtained from enzymatic hydrolysate at 100 rpm, no tryptone, Häßler medium. No hydrothermal pre-treatment was necessary discard, which increases profitability process. Therefore, g well 2.5 ethanol 2.1 acetoin by-products, (dry matter).

Paenibacillus polymyxa is a potential strain for (R,R)-2,3-butanediol production. Here, we report an annotated draft genome sequence of P. polymyxa strain ATCC 12321, which contains 4,429 protein-coding genes and 49 structural RNAs. This genome sequence provides a genetic basis for a better understanding of the mechanism for the accumulation of highly optically active (R,R)-2,3-butanediol.
